Near Mint Ep. 099 - Beginning of the End

November 28, 2017

Following a year of self-imopsed exile, our heroes emerge with bittersweet news. After 8+ orbits around the sun, the time has come for the starship Near Mint Comic Show to return to base.

Delays aside, this rust-free episode spells penultimate with a capital ULTIMATE! And despite big announcements and major real-life developments, we manage to get to some comic talk by the 10-minute mark. Top o' the Pile features a sampler plate of We Stand on Guard by Brian K. Vaughn, Amazing Spider-Man from Marvel, and DC's Super Sons.  After that we dive in on how we've evolved as comic fans and as people since we last met.

Joining the party is Sean Gordan Murphy, as we discuss his outspoken views on the business of comics. We tackle the latest (well ok, not so latest by the time you're hearing this) Movies and TV shows, and we set it all up for our 100th and FINAL epsiode.

Keep those cards and letters coming. Episode 100 will be a celebration of all things Near Mint and all things comics from the time we've been doing this show. We want to hear from fellow fans, what you've enjoyed about the show and about comics over the last decade. Send us a message (or better yet a VOICE message) at nearmintcomicshow@gmail.comfacebook.com/neatmintcomicshow, or @nmcomicshow. We know you've been listening and we want to hear from you!

Near Mint Ep. 098 - History in the Making

July 19, 2016

Continuing our march towards episode 100, Ben and Dan are back with comic talk for the ages. Dan’s Top o’ the Pile pick, March: Book One, leads us into a discussion about historical and non-fiction comics. We touch on everything from Maus, to Moving Pictures, The Nam to The Fifth Beatle and more.

There’s more comic talk to follow as Ben dives deeper into DC’s Rebirth with rapid-fire reviews of Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman and Detective Comics. Finally we wrap things up with Can o’ Beans, with talk of the soon-to-be-scarece Mike Mignola and a tease of a Mignola-centric episode to come in the near future.

Episode 100 is closing in fast and we need your help to get there. Keep listening and send your comments questions and suggestions for our biggest episode ever to nearmintcomicshow@gmail.com, facebook.com/neatmintcomicshow, or @nmcomicshow. Things are about to get REAL!

Near Mint Ep. 097 - Boston Pre-Party

June 23, 2016

Convention season is upon us and the Near Mint Comic Show is back with an overdue and overstuffed episode telling you everything you need to know to prepare yourself. We take a look at all the guest list for the upcoming Boston Comic Con – our biggest regional show and offer up a convention primer to get you ready for whatever conventions may be coming up in your area.

[EDITORS NOTE]: While not mentioned in the episode, this podcast is being released on the eve of MASSive Comic Con, taking place on June 25-26 in Worcester, MA. If you’re in the area, you should definitely check that out!

Later in the show, we take a loot at some of the “All-New, All-Different” Marvel books, which have come post-Secret-Wars and are newly available on the Marvel Unlimited app. We gauge our excitement level for books like Dr. Strange by Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo, Sam Wilson: Captain America, Howling Commandos of Shield, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and many more. It’s good ol’ fashioned, 2+ hour extravaganza, packed with tons of comics talk to kick off the summer!

Near Mint Ep. 096 - Threebirth

June 9, 2016

Ben, Josh and Dan are all back and there’s plenty to talk about. Movies have been seen. Comics have been read. Josh has big NEWS?? The universe will never be the same.

First up in Top o’ the Pile, Josh catches us up on Amazing Spider-Man, Ben has some high-brow praise for The Mighty Thor and Dan tries out the new Black Widow by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee.

In movie news, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice gets a tepid review from Josh, while Captain America: Civil War, gets (spoilers) 3 thumbs up!

And speaking of all-new, all-different – DC is shaking things up once again with Rebirth. Ben and Dan have read the debut issue of the massive, universe-realigning event. We give our thoughts on the new status quo and the new crop of books coming our way.

It’s a whole heap o’ comic talk to get you through ‘till next Wednesday. Happy listening!

Near Mint Ep. 095 - Darwynism

May 23, 2016

Rarely will an artist’s work meet such universal praise as the recently-departed Darwyn Cooke. The creator who gave us DC: The New Frontier and the Parker books, who reinvented Catwoman and reshaped Watchmen was beloved by us an many others. The comics community was brought low this month, by the sudden announcement of his illness and subsequent death at the age of 53.

In this episode, we pay tribute to the life and art of Darwyn Cooke with a special episode dedicated solely to his work. If you loved Darwyn, join us in saying a heartfelt goodbye. If you didn’t know his work, listen and learn about one of the greatest talents of our generation and one of the greatest cartoonists who ever lived.

Near Mint Ep. 094 - The Big Shorty

March 31, 2016

Big things come in short packages. It may be a #shortshow, but there’s comics action around every turn. Sparks fly as all three wheels of the train Near Mint try desperately to stay on the rails… which they succeed at until about the 58 minute mark.

In this episode, we kick off convention season with a strictly-second-hand report from C2E2. Snyder and Capullo drop the mic on their Batman run but DC isn’t dropping any clues about Rebirth. Excitement for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is building to a gentle simmer. Not to be outdone in the ‘heroes-senselessly-feuding-with-one-another’ department, Marvel is all in on Civil War on screen and in print. We even have time to talk about a movie without superheroes – can you believe they still make those?!

The #shortshow hoagie is stuffed between a Top o’ the Pile and a Can o’ Beans, piled high with extra helpings of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, Darwyn Cooke and Ramón Pérez, Batman Europa, Daredevil on Netflix – and so much more!

Near Mint Ep. 093 - Blackened With Science

March 17, 2016

Once again bending the laws of space and time, Ben and Dan come together to complete an episode over 3 weeks in the making. This pseudo book club episode is dedicated to the consumption of a long-overdue Can o’ Beans. Neither the laws of physics, nor the perils of extra-temporal audio recording can stop our heroes from diving in and discussing Black Science.

Black Science, is a trans-dimensional sci-fi epic from Image comics, featuring the artistic talents of Mateo Scalera and Dean White, written by Mint Award winner, Rick Remender. It’s colorful ensemble cast, rich world-building and frenetic pace have garnered a rabid fan base since the series kicked off in 2013. And while it’s been mentioned on the show before, we’ve never given it the full Near Mint treatment… until now!

Along with a lengthy discussion about Black Science, we crack open a new Can o’ Beans, tease the Boston Comic Con guest announcements and sing the praises up-and-coming artist, Elsa Charretier.

Near Mint Ep. 092 - Rated R for Reboot

March 3, 2016

It’s old school Near Mint action as Ben and Josh bring you a potpourri of hollywood talk including DC Rebirth, Deadpool, Daredevil, Batman v. Superman and more.

DC Comics is throwing out the bathwater once again with their recently announced Rebirth storyline. We talk about our excitement level, the endless reboot cycle and DCs desperate ploys to satisfy new and old readers alike.

Meanwhile, Deadpool is breaking the fourth wall and shattering box office expectations. What made this movie such a hit given its R rating and the somewhat polarizing nature of it’s machine-gun-toting, mouth-running lead character.

With Daredevil poised for season 2 and the Walking Dead, toying with fans at every turn, comics are dominating the small screen as well – and we’re here to talk about it.

And while Deadpool represents yet another hit in the successful run of Marvel films, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hopes to push the DC cinematic universe out of the starting gate and silence the many critics created with its aura of darkness and despair.

All this, plus a Top o’ the Pile, a Can o’ Beans, a rub and a tug, and a good time had by all. It’s the knock-down, drag-out, no-holds-barred episode that nobody was asking for. Don’t get left in the popcorn line!

Near Mint Ep. 091 - Collection Agency

February 18, 2016

In this episode, we delve into one of the seldom-delved corners of comics culture – the collector zone. We discuss our propensity to “collect” comics past and present. We talk high-finance and speculate on the right time to sell key issues and while this may be bring to some (or even us) we do it in typical Near Mint fashion  with a silly game show parody.

It’s The Price Guide Price is Right, with your host, Ben Peirce. Josh and Dan come on down to guess the price of comics for a chance at fabulous prizes* What Guardians of the Galaxy member has the most valuable first appearance? Who’s worth more Hal Jordan or Alan Scott? Just how much is a Near Mint copy of The Walking Dead #1 worth. All these useless questions and more are answered in a Showcase Showdown for the ages!

*There are no prizes awarded in this episode.

Near Mint Ep. 090 - Fantasy Roleplay

January 28, 2016

NINETY Episodes and still going strong! Josh is away, but Ben and Dan are here to reveal their deepest darkest desires in a spirited round of Fantasy Editor. We heat up the hot stove and place our favorite creators on dream projects and dream up blockbuster creative teams for marquee superhero books.

Imagine a world where Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips take over the Punisher, where Grant Morrison writes Yoda, where Scottie Young draws Harry Potter and we try our best not to just have Darwin Cooke do all the comics.

This one is LOADED with comic talk, but it’s not all all a what-if story. You also get the usual helping of Top o’ the Pile and Can o’ Beans that includes Fear Agent, Huck, The Star Wars and more. Get amped up for comics that will never be created in this Earth-shattering Elseworlds tale.

Near Mint Ep. 089 - The Force Awakens

January 14, 2016

It is the year 2016 and the geeks have truly inherited the earth. The entire world has been gripped by Star Wars fever and Ben and Dan are ready to weigh in on all the awesomeness spilling forth from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Before diving into our review of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, we start things off in typical fashion with Top o’ the Pile. Dan talks up The Goon, Vol. 6: Chinatown and Ben get’s the ball droid rolling with a healthy discussion about Marvel’s Star Wars comic line. Then it’s off to the movies.

SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains in-depth conversation of plot points from the movie. We discuss the characters, the themes, the big reveals and give our opinions on all of it. If you are somehow listening to a comicbook podcast and have not seen The Force Awakens, show some self-respect and get to the theater and see it NOW, because SPOILER ALERT – it’s great!

After an hour+ of movie talk we wrap things up with a spacefaring Can o’ Beans that includes Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin’s Valérian and Laureline series and Rick Remender’s hard-drinking space western, Fear Agent.

Near Mint Ep. 085 - Magically Delicious

November 19, 2015

It’s time to tap out and take 20 to the dome, as we reach across the aisle to compare comics to their brother-from-another-mothership, Magic: the Gathering. What can popular Magic play formats tell us about being fans and consumers of comics.

First though, Dan gives us a not-so-sterling review of the Rhone Island Comic Con, but manages to hook us up with a few creator soundbites. We get the lowdown on Marvel Universe Live and we talk Halloween costumes and inappropriately-old trick-or-treaters.

In Top o’ the Pile, Josh is nonplussed by Captain America: White, Ben catches up Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man and Dan dives into the back issue bin with Uncanny X-Men #268.

After that, Ben bogarts the mic for 10 minutes to set up our main topic and drop some Magic: the Gathering knowledge on all you comic book fans. We talk about at the Standard, Modern and Legacy formats and decide what books would constitute their comic counterparts.

All that and a Can o’ Beans makes for magic on the mic that you won’t want to miss.

Near Mint Ep. 084 - Comics in a Comic Shop

November 5, 2015

For 7+ years and 83 episodes, we’ve tried to tell you that the Near Mint Comic Show is, in fact about comicbooks and not stand-up comedians. And now for something completely different, we’re throwing in the towel and giving you what you want. On October 26, our friends at Double Midnight Comics hosted the first ever Double Midnight Comics presents: COMICS! – a night of stand-up comedy in a comic store. We were there to record the festivities and play them back for your listening pleasure.

The standup bill includes…

Ryan Chani (@ryanchani) hosts the show, warming up the crowd and introducing each set. Ryan is the host of the Learn to Take a Joke Comedy Podcast.

Paul Landwehr (paullandwehr.com) is a New England-based comic who was recently featured on WMUR’s Chronicle. He was voted “Best Local Comedian” by readers of The Hippo Press for two consecutive years in NH

Pamela Ross (@PamNotAnderson) is a Connecticut native, making her mark on the Boston comedy scene. She is the host of Comedy Night at Pavement Coffeehouse in Boston.

Jere Palapil (jerepcomedy.com) is the current comic in residence at the Comedy Studio in Harvard Square. He was the runner-up in ImprovBoston’s The People’s Battle and has been a guest on several comedy podcasts.

Jay Chanoine (jaychanoine.com) is a fifth level half-elf rogue, who's been seen across the east coast and on the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour. His debut comedy album – Come On Feel Chanoine – is available now on iTunes and Amazon.

Nick Lavalle (theotherdude.com) is a featured comic on funnyordie.com. He’s opened for national headliners and solidified himself as a national act by appearing the Laugh Factory in Las Vegas and Hollywood. Nick has several albums, including his latest – The Other Dude – available on iTunes.

If you still want a comicbook fix, fear not. Ben and Josh bookend the show in typical fashion with Top o’ the Pile and Can o’ Beans. Josh gives us the lowdown on the all-new, all-different Amazing Spider-Man #1 and how publishing delays and the Fantastic Four are ruining the end of Secret Wars. We talk Grayson and catch up with #AllTheRobins in Batman and Robin Eternal #1. If you’re just here for the comedy, skip ahead to the 15-minute mark.

Near Mint Ep. 083 - Six Degrees of Howard Chaykin

October 22, 2015

Dan and Ben take the helm this week for an episode jam-packed with comic talk. In a totally inaccessible Top o’ the Pile, Dan plugs a 50-year-old Doom Patrol story, and ben previews the yet-to-be-released Image comic, Citizen Jack. We discuss the news spinning out of NY Comic Con, including two upcoming X-Men shows and Y: the Last Man, headed to TV.

Later, Dan lets us help with an art Purchase decision and we debut a new game. Six Degrees of Howard Chaykin is a mashup of UNO and the telephone game with rapid-fire comics recommendations. All this, plus Saga, Bitch Planet, Paper Girls, I Hate Fairy Land, Tokyo Ghost and just about everything but Howard Chaykin – listen now and avoid eternal damnation.

Near Mint Ep. 082 - Reverse Burgling

October 8, 2015

In this week’s episode, we introduce two new segments and devise the world’s worst plan to keep your significant other from clamping down on your comic collection, but first up in Top o’ the Pile, we find out what book ben can’t quit, what you get when you add fun to Hellboy and whether Josh will ever catch up on Detective Comics.

In our first new segment – If you like that, try this – we discuss Fear The Walking Dead and make comic, movie and novel recommendations for fans of flagship show/comic. Then we head to the boardroom for our next new segment – Near Mint CEO – where we play armchair editor and try to fix D.C. Comics.

With all this, plus a Can o’ Beans, you won’t want to miss this episode. It’s 73 minutes of mindless entertainment that might just save you from the zombie apocalypse.

Near Mint Ep. 081 - Boiled Eggs and Beef Jerky

September 24, 2015

It’s a deep dive into geekdom this week as Ben and Dan settle in to cover 2 topics that go together like, well… eggs and jerky. In the first half of the show we revisit the “Kirkman Manifesto” seven years later. Then in act two, we try to pick the definitive stories and defining artists for DC and Marvel’s most popular heroes.

It’s been nearly 80 episodes since we talked about Robert Kirkman’s green-screened glove-slap to the comics industry. With Rick Remender’s recent proclamation to focus on creator-owned work and the Image renaissance in full swing, it’s a perfect time to look back. Join us as we turn back the clock to a bygone era of prophecy and un-ironic MySpace references.

Shifting gears, completely we look at Big-2 superheroes and try to pick the defining stories for the world’s most popular heroes – it’s harder than you’d think. We give our picks and choose a Can o’ Beans from the resulting list.

With all this, plus Top o’ the Pile and a Granitecon recap you’ll have plenty to chew on in this 108-minute serving of hard-boiled entertainment.

Near Mint Ep. 080 - It Exists

September 10, 2015

Back to normal after a couple of NEAR MINTerviews and our Cinematic Universe countdown, the boys settle in to talk comics, conventions and art. Con season is upon us in New England as we sit on the heels of Boston Comic Con and the eve of Granite State Comicon.

Ben recaps his experience at Boston Comic Con and his modest foray into original art collection. Then, Pat Covey of Double Midnight Comics (and the self-appointed New England Cosplay Ambassador) joins us to talk about Granitecon. We get a full preview of things to come, including Lando, cosplay and a behind-the-curtain look at what goes into putting on a comicbook convention.

All this, plus Top o’ the Pile, Can o’ Beans, and some miscellaneous comic talk that includes Josh’s tepid response to Secret Wars and Fantastic Four. It’s our 80th episode and… it exists.
